P.J. Devereaux

Overview

Dr. Devereaux is a cardiologist, perioperative care physician, and clinical epidemiologist. He is the Director of the Division of Perioperative Care at McMaster University. Dr. Devereaux is a member of the CLARITY research group. He is a Senior Scientist and the Scientific Leader of the Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine, and Surgical Research Group at the Population Health Research Institute. Dr. Devereaux is a full Professor in the Departments of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact (HEI) and Medicine at McMaster University. He is the President of the Society of Perioperative Research and Care. He is the Chair of the Institute Advisory Board for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH)

Areas of Research Interest

Dr. Devereaux’s research focuses on improving the outcomes of patients undergoing surgery. He leads large international randomized controlled trials and observational studies in this area. He also leads work in virtual care and remote automated monitoring technologies. He has created a collaboration of researchers participating in perioperative studies in >30 countries and >300 centres.

Training

Dr. Devereaux obtained his MD from McMaster University. After medical school he completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Calgary and a residency in cardiology at Dalhousie University. He then completed a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology at McMaster University under the tutelage of Drs. Gordon Guyatt and Salim Yusuf.

Distinctions

Dr. Devereaux has published >390 peer reviewed papers and >85 book chapters, editorials, and commentaries. Dr. Devereaux has an h-index of 102 and 132,754 citations. He has given >1000 lectures and research presentations in 41 countries. He has received 30 research awards including the following: Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) Top Achievements in Health Research National Award; Jack Hirsh Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement in the Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University; American Society of Anesthesiology Honorary Member Award; Annually Listed in the Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researchers list since 2017; Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR-ICRH) and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) Distinguished Lecturer Award in Cardiovascular Sciences. Dr. Devereaux has received 5 teaching awards including Canadian Association for Medical Education Certificate of Merit Award for Contributions to Medical Education. He has also received McMaster University, Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact (HEI), inaugural David Sackett Mentorship & Supervision Award in the Full Time & Joint category

He is supported by the McMaster University / Hamilton Health Sciences Chair in Perioperative Care. Dr. Devereaux holds a Tier 1 Canadian Research Chair in Perioperative Medicine.

Current Research Projects

  • Dr. Devereaux is leading large trials and observational studies evaluating virtual care and remote automated monitoring technology in patients undergoing surgery.

Educational and Mentorship Activities

  • Dr. Devereaux along with Dr. Vikas Tandon created the first Perioperative Cardiovascular Fellowship Program in Canada in 2014. This has now evolved into a Perioperative Care Fellowship Program and attracts trainees from all over the world to train at McMaster University. Dr. Devereaux along with Dr. Ameen Patel led the creation of the Perioperative Care Congress in 2017, which is now an annual international congress. Dr. Devereaux mentors many outstanding early and mid career faculty members.

Trainee Supervision

  • Dr Devereaux supervises PhD and MSc students in the Health Research Methodology Program at McMaster University, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting researchers.
